Ancient Egypt

Travel back in time to the land of the pyramids, pharaohs, priests, builders, craftspeople and farmers. Our Ancient Egyptian workshop will transform your class's learning of this significant time-period so that they will understand how the contribution of this civilization informs our way of living even today. Learn about how everyday Egyptians lived their lives, how they farmed the land and how they worshipped. Find out about the pharaoh's army and how they fought using sword, shield, sling, spear and archery.

'Year 3/4 had a fantastic day learning about Ancient Egypt. We were visited by Tia and Seneb. During the day, the children learnt about early Egypt, the pyramids, farming, soldiers, mummification, pharaohs, gods, priests and society.' Miss R Willey, yr 3/4 teacher, Castle Primary, Tiverton.

Possible morning activities

Welcome by Mamluk and Rehema in role - find out how the Ancient Egyptians started over 7000 years ago.
Pyramids - the story of how the Great Pyramids were built.
Clothing and jewellery - design and make an Ancient Egyptian style usekh collar.
Learn about the river Nile and farming. Make a model shaduf and undertake the 'shaduf challenge'.
Mummification. Learn about how the Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead in preparation for the afterlife.
Writing. Write your name or send a message to your friend using hieroglyphic writing.
Play the ancient boardgame, Mancala

Possible afternoon activities

Listen to some Ancient Egyptian style music played live on the lyre and whistle.
Learn about the social structure of Ancient Egypt and the gods that people worshipped. Learn about famous pharaohs and their activities and legacies.
Learn about Ancient Egyptian soldiers and weapons.
Practise archery skills using safety arrows.
Practise how to be an Ancient Egyptian soldier with battle formation drills - working with wooden swords, shields and spears.
Have a go at popular children's games such as Tug of war
Using a slingshot
Play the ancient boardgame, Mehen.
